The game ended in a 7-4 win for japan which gave Mexico its second loss of the opening round, but still advancing to the elimination stage of the tournament where the play tonight against 24th ranked Israel.

Leones fan favorite Jonny Jones secured his first hit at the Olympic games when in the bottom of the fifth, he singled back to the pitcher who was unable to get the out at first. However, it was not enough as the next batter grounded out, resulting in the third out of the inning.

Mexico started hot when Isaac Rodriguez scored on a Joey Meneses single to center field in the first inning, taking an early 1-0 lead in the game. Japan answered at the top of the second when a KAI Takuya singles allowed ASAMURA Hideto to cross home, tying the game 1-1 when Japan extended their lead by four in the next two innings.

The score was 5-2 after Mexicos Sebastian Elizalde crossed the plate in the fourth inning. The seventh and eighth saw japan extend their lead further after a SAKAMOTO Hayato in the seventh and a YAMADA Tetsuto single allowed KAI Takuya to cross the plate in the eighth inning. The final score for Mexico came in the bottom of the eighth when Isaac Rodriguez scores again on a two-run homer by Joey Meneses.
