The first two baseball games played at the Olympics in 13 years have ended in walk-offs!

Today’s game between Israel and Korea was tied 5-5 as the game went to the tenth inning when, with bases loaded, the Israeli pitcher hit Korean YANG Euiji at the plate resulting in a bizarre walk-off walk.

The Israeli team took an early lead in the third when Ian Kinsler hit a home run to left field, knocking Mitch Glasser home. The lead didn’t last as in the bottom of the fourth when Korea answered with a home run of their own off the bat of Oh Ji Hwan, allowing baserunner KANG Minho to cross the plate.

The sixth inning saw Ryan Lavarnway hit his first home run of the night as Danny Valencia crossed the plate– allowing Israel to retake the lead 4-2 until in the bottom of the seventh when Korea roared back with two opening salvos across the right-field wall scoring on back to back home runs from LEE Jung Hoo and KIM Hyunsoo. Tieing the game 4-4 as OH Jaeil crossed home on an OH Ji Hwan double to center field to end the inning, giving Korea a one-run lead as Israel came to the plate in the ninth.

Lavarnway’s second home run of the night came in the ninth, tying the game 5-5 as Israels’ defense was able to end the inning, securing three quick outs bringing the game to extra innings, but the Israeli offense could not get anything going at the top of the tenth inning bringing Korea back to the plate. The game ended in a nail-biting situation when with two outs, bases loaded, and a 2-1 count, the Israeli pitcher, hit the Korean batter YANG Euiji forcing the winning run to walk across the plate in a Walk-off Walk.
