Merida, Yuc. (elgordogringo.com.mx) July 22, 2021.- The iconic Puerto Rican, Luis David Matos, is announced as the new manager of the Yucatan Lions for the remainder of the 2021 LMB season.
The former Major Leaguer and Yucatan Leone’s outfielder (between 2008 and 2012) makes his LMB debut this Friday, where he will take over from interim-manager Francisco ‘Chico’ Rodríguez. The 42-year-old veteran was hired as the assistant coach in 2015 for the Great Lakes Loons in the Midwest League but became manager when the position was vacated when the original manager left to fill a vacancy with the Dodgers California League team.
In 2016, he debuted as manager in the Liga de Béisbol Profesional Roberto Clemente, the main professional baseball league in Puerto Rico, with the Criollos de Caguas In January 2017, he won the league championship. In February 2017, he managed the Criollos to a championship in the Caribbean Series when they defeated Mexico 1–0 in 10 innings. It was the first Caribbean Series title for Puerto Rico since 2000. By winning his second consecutive Caribbean Series in as many tries in 2018, Matos tied the record of successive titles held by the Nap Reyes of Tigres de Marianao for six decades.
