Mérida, Yuc. (elgordogringo.com.m) July 30, 2021- Israels national baseballs team inclusion at the Olympic games is something out of a movie; baseball makes its return to the Olympic stage for the first time in thirteen years, Israel’s national team won or placed in the top five in four tournaments to get the chance to compete at the Olympics for the first time in Israeli baseball history. Even with all of the momentum that propelled the team to Tokyo, they are still ranked 24th while the next lowest-ranked team in the competition is ranked 7th.
Now that we are all caught up on Israel’s road to get here, the only surprising thing is how well they have shown up! They have lost both of their two opening-round games, but the first game was against the 3rd ranked Korean national team where Israel managed to tie the game in 5-5 in the ninth, bringing the game to extra innings where they allowed Korea to score one run in the 10th winning the game. Although a loss for a team ranked 21 spots lower, it’s a hell of a showing, so it’s no surprise that they managed to put up only a single run in the 8-1 loss when they took on the fourth-placed USA national team.
Things started clicking for Team USA in the third inning as Nick Allen scored on an Eddy Alvarez double, giving team USA an early 1-0 when Tyler Austin came to the plate knocking it to deep center field, knocking Alvarez home ending the inning up two runs. Team Israel came to the plate at the bottom of the fourth, scoring their only run of the game on a Danny Valencia single over the left-field wall bringing the score to a manageable 3-1.
The sixth inning saw the USA national team extend their lead as Todd Frazier scores on a Bubba Starling single to left field, bringing the score to 4-1. The USA would rack up four more runs through the next three innings as Jamie Westbrook, Eddy Alvarez, Eric Fila, and Tyler Austin would cross the plate for one run each.
