Merida, Yuc. ( June 27, 2021–Starting pitcher Yoanner ‘Asere’ Negrín secured his 56th victory, becoming the third-winningest pitcher in the franchise’s 64-year history in a dominating pitching display, allowing one run through his seven innings from the mound. Relievers Chaves and the season debut of the reliever Christian Prado ended the game for the Leones. Prado keeps his ERA below zero– an inside joke– as he retired the side in the eighth inning!

Some more good news for Leones fans was the return of Jonny Jones to the diamond. He was allowed to pinch hit for Luis ¨Pepon¨ Juarez in the seventh and take over left field for the remainder of the game! Jones is fresh off a great showing in Mexico City, where the national team hosted exhibition games against Venezuela and the Dominican Republic. This season saw Jonny on the Injured list early, and he will be making his way to Tokyo next month– so it’s great to see him out there for the Leones!

The game was a continuation of last night, with the focus on hitting for contact. The only home run of the game came in the seventh inning when Drake hit in 2 runners bringing the score to 14-1, where it would remain till the end.

Both the first and third innings saw 5-run rallies with Alex Liddi going 4-for-4 with a pair of runs while Cuban Yadir Drake connected for three hits and batted in five runs. It was a great game and a great win for the Leones!

The only distraction came from off the field as a fan had to be escorted out for refusing to wear a mask– the stadium and organization are doing everything they can to be able to put on this already shortened season; please wear a mask if you are going to enjoy the game or anything in the city. There is zero chance of talking your way out of this requirement! We are almost through this– be adults and obey the rules.

The Leones will be visiting the Warriors of Oaxaca Tuesday to Thursday and will travel this weekend to face the Pericos de Puebla again; if we can string together a winning streak, we can retake our top spot in the division.
