The Copa Maya series ended Sunday with a disappointing finish for Yucatán.

Dalton Rodriguez — the Leones’ starting pitcher — was replaced in the top of the third after allowing six runs. A couple of early errors by the shortstop contributed to the early lead for the Olmecas; the score at the top of the third was 6-1 Olmecas.

The dismal pitching continued into the fifth inning — after another pitching change and a scoring run for the Olmecas — when Mexico’s own Jonas Garibay took to the mound.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Leones roared back with a three-run flurry bringing the score to 7-4 — on the back of pitching that did not allow a run scored until the eighth.

The eighth run for the Olmecas came in on a controversial call by the umpire when No. 47 took the mound, making the score 8-4 Olmecas.

After 20 months, fans will be welcomed back to Kukulcán Alamo Park as the Leones play their last two preseason games Tuesday and Wednesday against the Tigres de Quintana Roo.
