There have been three incarnations of the Leones De Yucatan to Play in Merida. The first in 1954, when the Leones entered the Mexican league under the leadership of Alvaro Ponce Vidiella and Humberto “Beto” Abimerhi. Winning a single league championship in their initial four seasons.

The second was in the 1969 season when filmmaker Manuel Barbachano Ponce, moved the Pericos de Puebla franchise to Mérida, renaming them the Leones— this incarnation lasted five seasons before the team was bought and moved to Tobasco.
